What is a postpartum doula?

Having a postpartum doula by your side as you recover can be an incredible gift. Many moms are not prepared for how exhausted they feel in the weeks after birth, and combined with recovering from childbirth and learning to breastfeed, the postpartum window can be a bit overwhelming. A postpartum doula is a trained professional whose role is to assist the new mother in caring for baby, as well as helping with basic postpartum care, light household duties, and sometimes the care of older children. Their primary goal is to “mother the mother” while also helping care for the baby and ensure that the entire family is adjusting well to the addition of the new family member. A postpartum doula provides education, as well as physical and emotional support. Many doulas are experienced in helping mothers breastfeed, and may also be trained lactation counselors or consultants.

All of the doulas we place through Lavender are certified through one of the professional doula organizations, such as CAPPA or DONA.
